Lock Screen Typing the Wrong Characters? Fix the Sign-in Layout

A password that is correct but rejected at the lock screen, then works fine once you are signed in, is almost never a forgotten password. It is two different keyboard layouts on two different screens.

First, see what you are really typing

You cannot fix a substitution you cannot see, and the dots hide it. Two ways to reveal it:

  • The eye icon at the right of the Windows password box shows the text while you hold it.
  • The username field displays plain text. Type your password there once, read it, then clear it and type it properly in the password box.

Nine times out of ten you will see an at sign where you expected a quote, or a hash where you expected a backslash, and the diagnosis is finished.

Getting in right now

The sign-in screen has a language button, usually at the bottom right beside the power and accessibility icons, showing a short code such as ENG or DEU. Click it and choose the layout your keyboard actually is, then retype the password.

If there is no button, the On-Screen Keyboard is available from the accessibility icon in the same corner. Click the symbols on screen rather than typing them and you bypass the layout entirely. This is the reliable escape hatch when nothing else works.

The other possibility is NumLock. If your password contains digits and you type them on the number pad, a pad that is off at boot sends arrow keys instead — and the password box registers nothing at all for those keystrokes, so the password is simply short. Press NumLock once before typing.

Making the fix permanent on Windows

The setting is buried, and it is the one that actually stops this recurring. Sign in, then openSettings, Time & Language,Language & Region, scroll to Administrative language settings.

In the dialog that opens, go to the Administrative tab and clickCopy settings. Tick both Welcome screen and system accountsand New user accounts, then apply and restart.

This copies your current layout to the sign-in screen. Without it, changing the layout at the lock screen only lasts for that one attempt.

Making the fix permanent on macOS

macOS shows the input menu at the login window only if it has been enabled. OpenSystem Settings, Keyboard, Input Sources,Edit, and turn on Show Input menu in menu bar. That menu then appears at the login window too.

Removing the layout you do not use is the stronger fix, because FileVault's pre-boot screen has its own layout handling and is the hardest of all to change after the fact.

Choosing a password this cannot happen to

Letters and digits occupy identical positions across every Latin keyboard layout. Symbols do not. A long passphrase of ordinary words is both stronger than a short symbol-laden password and immune to this entire class of problem.

If you do want symbols, these stay put across US, UK and most European layouts: hyphen, full stop, comma, and the digits. These move and are worth avoiding in a login password:

When symbols are wrong inside the desktop session as well, the layout itself needs correcting rather than copying — seewrong keyboard layout. If it started right after a system update, that specific case is covered inwrong symbols after an update.

Questions

Why does my password work in the desktop but not at the lock screen?

Windows and macOS keep a separate keyboard layout for the sign-in screen. If your password contains a symbol that moves between layouts, the character you type there is not the character you set.

How do I see what I am actually typing?

Click the eye icon in the password box on Windows, or type the password into the username field where it is shown in plain text. Either reveals the substitution immediately.

Which characters are the risky ones?

The at sign, backslash, hash, pound, dollar, quote marks and the pipe. Letters and digits are identical across Latin layouts, so a password made only of those never has this problem.
