Keyboard Typing Numbers Instead of Letters? Fix It in a Minute

Press J and get 1. Press O and get 6. The keyboard is not damaged and the driver is fine — a hidden number pad has been switched on underneath the letters. One key combination turns it off.

First, confirm it is the embedded numpad

Open Notepad or any text box and type these seven letters in order: ui o jk l m.

If you get 4 5 6 1 2 3 0, this page is the right one. That exact mapping is the embedded numeric keypad that compact and laptop keyboards hide inside the right-hand letter block, and it is a deliberate feature rather than a fault.

If instead you get letters mixed with symbols, or the wrong symbols on the number row, the cause is a different one — seekeyboard typing symbols instead of lettersorthe wrong keyboard layout.

Fix 1: Fn + NumLock

Hold Fn and press NumLock once, then retype the seven letters. On the great majority of laptops that is the whole fix.

Many keyboards have no key labelled NumLock at all. The function is still there, printed in small secondary type — often in the same colour as the Fn key itself — on one of these:

  • F11 — common on HP, Acer and many Asus models
  • Scroll Lock — common on Lenovo ThinkPad
  • Insert or Delete — common on Dell
  • F8 or Num Lk — common on older Toshiba and Samsung

Look along the top row and the block above the arrow keys for the letters NumLk, NumLock or a small padlock over a 9-dot grid. Hold Fn and press whichever key carries it.

Fix 2: the On-Screen Keyboard, when no key works

If you cannot find the key, or the Fn key itself is not responding, you can toggle the same state in software. Press Win + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard, click Options, tick Turn on numeric key pad, then click the NumLock button that appears.

On macOS the embedded pad does not exist in the same form, so a Mac showing numbers for letters is nearly always a stuck modifier or a third-party remapper instead. Check System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, Modifier Keys and confirm nothing has been reassigned.

Fix 3: stop it returning after every restart

If the keyboard is fine until you reboot and then goes back to typing numbers, Windows is not the culprit. The boot-time state is decided by firmware before Windows loads.

Restart, press the setup key during the boot logo — usually F2,F10 or Del depending on the maker — and look under Boot, Advanced or Keyboard for a setting called NumLock State,Bootup NumLock State or Power-on NumLock. Set it to Off or Disabled and save.

Fix 4: when a remapper is responsible

If none of the above changes anything, something in software is rewriting your keystrokes before the application sees them. The usual candidates are AutoHotkey scripts, PowerToys Keyboard Manager, gaming keyboard software such as Synapse or iCUE, and remote-desktop clients that pass a stale modifier state through.

Quit each in turn and retest between each one. A remote session is worth testing early: an RDP or VNC window can hold NumLock in a different state from the machine you are sitting at, so the pad appears to switch on by itself whenever the window takes focus.

Once it is working again

The same NumLock state that caused this is also what Alt codes depend on. If you type symbols such as or using Alt codes, those need NumLock on and a real number pad.

On a laptop with no pad at all, theAlt codes without a number pad guidecovers the alternatives, andnumpad not workingcovers the opposite problem, where the pad refuses to produce numbers at all.

Questions

Why is my keyboard typing numbers instead of letters?

A laptop keyboard with no separate number pad hides one inside the right-hand letters. When that embedded pad is switched on, U I O J K L M become 4 5 6 1 2 3 0. Nothing is broken and nothing needs reinstalling.

Which key turns it off?

Fn + NumLock on most laptops. When there is no NumLock key it is printed in small type on another key, usually F11, Scroll Lock, Insert or Delete. Hold Fn and press that key once.

Why does it come back every time I restart?

The boot-time NumLock state is set in BIOS or UEFI, not in Windows. Change the NumLock or Bootup NumLock State setting there and it will stay off.
