Emoji Showing as Boxes? Fix Missing Emoji Fonts

An empty rectangle is the browser or operating system saying it received a valid character but has no picture for it. The text is fine. The font is not.

Why newer emoji fail and older ones do not

Unicode adds emoji in yearly batches, and the emoji font on your device was built at a fixed point in time. Anything added after that point has a valid code point but no glyph in your font, so the renderer draws its placeholder box instead.

This is why the failure looks so arbitrary: a message can contain ten emoji and show nine. The one that failed is simply newer than your font.

It also explains why the same message looks fine on your phone and broken on your laptop. Two devices, two font versions, one message.

When one emoji becomes several

A good number of modern emoji are not single characters at all. They are sequences of characters stitched together with an invisible zero-width joiner, and the font is expected to recognise the whole sequence and draw one picture.

When it does not, you see the parts. A family emoji renders as separate people. A professional emoji renders as a person followed by an object. A flag renders as two letters in boxes, because flags are pairs of regional indicator symbols.

Skin tone works the same way: a base emoji followed by a modifier. An unsupported combination shows the default-coloured emoji followed by a coloured square.

You can see all of this for yourself by pasting the emoji into theunicode inspector, which lists every code point in the sequence including the joiners.

Windows

The font is Segoe UI Emoji and it updates with Windows itself, so Windows Update is the fix. Windows 11 carries a considerably newer set than Windows 10, which is why the same page can look different on two machines in the same office.

If emoji fail in one application only, that application has specified a font without emoji coverage and is not falling back. Change the font there. To check the system font is intact, press Win + . to open the emoji panel — if the panel itself shows boxes, the font is genuinely damaged and worth reinstalling.

macOS and iOS

The font is Apple Color Emoji and it ships with the operating system. Apple usually delivers new emoji in a point release rather than a major version, so a minor update is often enough.

Occasionally Font Book reports the emoji font as disabled or duplicated after a migration. Open Font Book, search for Apple Color Emoji, and make sure exactly one copy is enabled.

Android

Android is the platform where this happens most, because the emoji font historically travelled with the system update rather than separately, and system updates are slow to arrive on many devices.

Newer versions can update emoji through Google Play system updates, found under Settings, Security & privacy, System & updates, Google Play system update. Updating the Gboard keyboard from the Play Store also refreshes the set on many devices. Without root access there is no reliable way to replace the font on an older device.

Linux

Most distributions ship no colour emoji font at all, so every emoji is a box until you install one. fonts-noto-color-emoji on Debian and Ubuntu,google-noto-emoji-color-fonts on Fedora, noto-fonts-emoji on Arch.

After installing, run fc-cache -f -v and restart the application. If emoji still fail in one toolkit only, a fontconfig rule may be excluding the font — check/etc/fonts/conf.d for anything that blocks Noto Color Emoji.

When you cannot change the device

If you are writing for an audience you do not control — a corporate intranet, a print-bound document, an embedded display — the safest move is to avoid recent emoji altogether and use the older symbol characters, which are present in ordinary text fonts rather than emoji fonts.

These render almost everywhere:

For inserting emoji in documents, seeinserting emoji in Word, and for the general box-instead-of-character case seewhen a font shows boxes.

Questions

Why do some emoji show and others appear as boxes?

The emoji set grows every year and your installed emoji font only contains the ones it shipped with. Older emoji render, newer ones fall back to a placeholder box. Updating the operating system updates the font.

Why does one emoji show as two separate ones?

Many modern emoji are sequences joined by an invisible zero-width joiner. If the font lacks the combined form, it displays the individual parts instead. A family becomes several people, a flag becomes two letters.

Does the box mean the message is corrupted?

No. The characters are intact and will display correctly on a device with a newer font. Only a question mark means actual data loss.
