How to Insert Emojis in Microsoft Word | Fast Shortcuts

Microsoft Word does not have a dedicated 'Insert Emoji' button on the default ribbon, but every modern operating system provides an instant system emoji picker.

1. Windows Keyboard Shortcut: Win + .

In Microsoft Word on Windows 11 or Windows 10, press:

Windows Key + . (Period) or Windows Key + ; (Semicolon)

A floating picker appears right at your typing cursor. Type to search (e.g. "thumbs up", "fire", "clock"), click the emoji, and press Esc to dismiss the picker.

2. Mac Keyboard Shortcut: Cmd + Ctrl + Space

In Word for Mac (macOS Sonoma, Sequoia, and earlier), press:

Command (⌘) + Control (⌃) + Space

This summons Apple’s Character Viewer palette. Click any emoji or special glyph to drop it directly into your Word document.

3. Built-in AutoCorrect Emoji Shortcuts

Word automatically converts classic text emoticons into symbols as you type:

  • :) converts to 😊 (Smiley face)
  • :( converts to 🙁 (Sad face)
  • :D converts to 😀 (Grinning face)
  • ;) converts to 😉 (Wink)
  • (y) in Word for Web converts to 👍 (Thumbs up)

If Word changes an emoticon when you wanted plain text, immediately hit Ctrl + Z (or Cmd + Z) to revert it.

Word displays modern color emojis using the Segoe UI Emoji font on Windows and Apple Color Emoji on Mac. However, some physical desktop printers default to black-and-white outline glyphs.

Pro Tip: To guarantee full-color emoji reproduction in shared documents, export your document via File → Save as PDF before printing or sending to external recipients.
