How Character and Word Limits Work
Different platforms enforce character limits with distinct counting methods. Twitter (X) limits standard posts to 280 characters, Meta titles typically truncate at 60 characters, and SMS segments at 160 GSM-7 characters (or 70 characters when Unicode emoji or accents are included).
UTF-8 byte counts differ from character counts for special characters and symbols. Standard ASCII letters use 1 byte each, Latin accents (such as á or ü) require 2 bytes, and mathematical symbols (like √ or ∑) consume 3 bytes.
