About Omega Symbol (Ω)

History, typographic usage standards, and Unicode block

Omega (Ω, U+03A9) is the last letter of the Greek alphabet, used in physics for electrical resistance (ohms) and in probability for the full sample space. On Mac, Option+Z types it directly.

In standard typography and document styling, symbols and accents should adhere to standard spacing guidelines. When typing numbers or equations, avoid confusing lookalike characters (such as confusing the letter "x" with the true multiplication operator "×", or using a degree symbol "°" in place of a superscript zero "⁰").

Official Unicode Reference:

Registered as GREEK CAPITAL LETTER OMEGA at codepoint U+03A9 within the Unicode Standard. Consult the official Unicode Greek and Coptic specification chart (PDF via unicode.org).

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about typing and formatting Omega Symbol

What is the fastest way to copy Omega Symbol (Ω)?

Use the copy button at the top of this page. It places Ω on your clipboard so you can paste it anywhere with Ctrl + V on Windows or Cmd + V on Mac.

What is the Windows Alt code for Ω?

Hold Alt and type 234 on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on. The row of numbers above the letters will not work — it has to be the keypad.

How do I type Ω on a Mac?

Press Option + Z anywhere in macOS to produce Ω.

How do I type Ω in Microsoft Word?

Type 03A9, Alt+X in Word — enter the code, then press Alt + X and Word converts it into Ω.

Why does Ω not appear when I press the keys?

The usual causes are Num Lock being off for Alt codes, a keyboard layout that does not match the shortcut you are using, or an app that intercepts the key combination. Try the copy button first to confirm the character itself displays correctly on your system.

Do I need a Greek keyboard layout to type Ω?

No. Omega Symbol is available through an Alt code, a Mac shortcut, Word's Alt+X conversion and the Symbol dialog, all without switching layout. A Greek layout is only worth adding if you type continuous Greek text rather than the occasional symbol.

How do I type Ω on iPhone or Android?

On iOS, add the Greek keyboard under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards, or copy Ω from this page. On Android, Not on the standard keyboard — copy it from this page.
