Alt Codes in Word vs Excel | Fast Keyboard Shortcuts Guide

Millions of office workers wonder why a symbol shortcut that works effortlessly in Microsoft Word suddenly fails or rings an error bell in Microsoft Excel. Here is the technical explanation and the foolproof solution for both apps.

1. The Core Architectural Difference

Microsoft Word is a rich-text flow engine. The text insertion cursor exists in a continuous typographic document space with built-in font rendering hooks and Unicode toggles.

Microsoft Excel is a calculation grid. Cells are discrete computational formulas. When you type in a cell, you are operating inside an edit-mode buffer that processes cell formulas first and typographical characters second.

2. Why Alt+X Works in Word but Fails in Excel

In Word, typing 00B0 followed by Alt + X instantly transforms into the degree symbol (°).

In Excel, pressing Alt + X does nothing or triggers the ribbon navigation shortcut for add-ins. Excel’s keyboard handler does not intercept Alt+X as a Unicode hex toggle.

The Excel Fix: In Excel, you must either:

  • Hold Alt and type the legacy keypad Alt code (e.g. Alt + 0176 for °).
  • Or use Excel’s formula engine: =UNICHAR(HEX2DEC("00B0")) or =UNICHAR(176).

3. Formula Superpower in Excel: CHAR() vs UNICHAR()

Excel allows you to programmatically inject symbols into financial reports and concatenated strings:

=UNICHAR(8364) → Inserts the Euro sign (€)
=UNICHAR(10003) → Inserts a checkmark (✓)
=A1 & " " & UNICHAR(176) & "C" → Appends °C to cell A1 temperature readings
=CHAR(10) → Inserts a newline break inside a cell (enable Wrap Text on the cell!)
