Option Key Not Typing Symbols on Mac? Causes and Fixes

The Option key is where macOS keeps most of its symbols, so when it stops behaving the whole symbol set disappears at once. There are four causes and one tool that identifies which you have in about five seconds.

Start with Keyboard Viewer

This is the single most useful tool for the problem and most Mac users have never opened it. Go to System Settings, Keyboard,Input Sources, Edit, and turn onShow Input menu in menu bar. Then click the menu-bar icon and chooseShow Keyboard Viewer.

Hold Option with the viewer open. Every key redraws to show the character it will produce, for the layout you are actually using.

What you see next tells you which fix applies:

  • Keys redraw with the symbols you expect — the layout is fine, so an application is intercepting. Jump to the app section.
  • Keys redraw with different symbols — wrong input source. Next section.
  • Nothing redraws at all — the Option key is not reaching macOS. Modifier remap or hardware.
  • Some keys highlight orange — those are dead keys and they are working correctly.

Cause 1: the input source is not the one you think

Option mappings are layout-specific and they differ more than people expect. The familiar combinations — Option + G for,Option + R for,Option + 2 for,Option + Shift + 8 for— are the US and ABC layouts. British, German, French and Spanish layouts move several of them.

Check the input menu shows the layout you intend. If two are installed,Control + Space cycles between them and is easy to hit by accident; remove the one you do not need rather than living with it.

ABC – Extended is worth a mention: it gives more accent combinations but changes some Option behaviour compared with plain ABC, which is why symbols can move after what felt like a harmless settings change.

Cause 2: Option has been remapped

System Settings, Keyboard,Keyboard Shortcuts, Modifier Keys. Confirm Option Key is set to Option and not to Command, Control or No Action.

Two things make this more common than it sounds. The setting is per keyboard, so plugging in a different keyboard can bring a different mapping with it — check the dropdown at the top of that panel names the keyboard you are using. And anyone who has used a Windows keyboard on a Mac may have swapped Option and Command deliberately at some point and forgotten.

Third-party tools remap at a lower level and will not appear in that panel at all. Karabiner-Elements, BetterTouchTool, Hammerspoon and several gaming keyboard drivers are worth quitting and retesting.

Cause 3: an application is claiming the combination

Test the same keystroke in TextEdit. If it works there and not in the app you need it in, the app has bound it.

Adobe applications, JetBrains IDEs, terminal emulators and window managers are the usual candidates. In a terminal, check whether Use Option as Meta key is enabled — that setting deliberately converts Option into an escape prefix, which is what a shell user wants and a symbol typist does not.

System-wide hotkeys can also swallow a combination before any application sees it. The list is in Keyboard Shortcuts, under Services and App Shortcuts.

Cause 4: the key itself

Only worth considering once Keyboard Viewer shows no response at all. Try the right Option key as well as the left, since they are separate switches and one can fail alone. Try an external keyboard to separate the board from the system.

If an external keyboard works and the built-in one does not, the fault is the internal keyboard. In the meantime, Character Viewer viaControl + Command + Space gives you every symbol without the Option key at all.

Once it is working

The complete set of Option combinations is inMac special characters, andAlt codes on Macexplains what the Windows Alt code equivalents are, since there is no direct translation.

For accents specifically, the dead-key sequences are covered inunwanted accents on letters, which is the same mechanism seen from the other side.

Questions

Why does Option plus a letter do nothing on my Mac?

Either the input source does not map Option combinations the way the US layout does, or the Option key has been remapped in Modifier Keys, or the frontmost app has claimed that combination as a shortcut.

Why does Option + E do nothing until I press another key?

That is correct behaviour. Option + E, Option + U, Option + I, Option + N and Option + ` are accent dead keys. They wait for the letter you want the accent on. Press the space bar to get the accent alone.

How do I see which symbol every key produces?

Turn on the Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu, then hold Option. The on-screen keyboard redraws to show exactly what each key will type with Option held, for your current layout.
