About S with Accent (ś)

History, typographic usage standards, and Unicode block

Accented S splits three ways: ś (Polish), š (Czech, Slovak, Baltic) and ş (Turkish, Romanian). They live outside Latin-1, so the Alt codes are five digits starting with 0 (0347/0353/0351) and Word's Alt+X method is the reliable fallback everywhere.

In standard typography and document styling, symbols and accents should adhere to standard spacing guidelines. When typing numbers or equations, avoid confusing lookalike characters (such as confusing the letter "x" with the true multiplication operator "×", or using a degree symbol "°" in place of a superscript zero "⁰").

Official Unicode Reference:

Registered as LATIN SMALL LETTER S WITH ACUTE at codepoint U+015B within the Unicode Standard. Consult the official Unicode Latin Extended-A specification chart (PDF via unicode.org).

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about typing and formatting S with Accent

What is the fastest way to copy S with Accent (ś)?

Use the copy button at the top of this page. It places ś on your clipboard so you can paste it anywhere with Ctrl + V on Windows or Cmd + V on Mac.

What is the Windows Alt code for ś?

Hold Alt and type 0347 on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on. The row of numbers above the letters will not work — it has to be the keypad.

How do I type ś on a Mac?

Press Control + Command + Space to open Character Viewer, search for "S with Accent", and double-click ś.

How do I type ś in Microsoft Word?

Type 015B, Alt+X in Word — enter the code, then press Alt + X and Word converts it into ś.

Why does ś not appear when I press the keys?

The usual causes are Num Lock being off for Alt codes, a keyboard layout that does not match the shortcut you are using, or an app that intercepts the key combination. Try the copy button first to confirm the character itself displays correctly on your system.

How do I type ś on a phone?

Hold the s key, then slide to ś on iPhone. Hold the s key, then slide to ś on Android.

Will ś survive copy and paste into other apps?

Yes, as long as the destination handles UTF-8, which every modern app does. Problems appear only in legacy systems that assume plain ASCII, where ś may be stripped or turned into a question mark.
